In the summer of 2015, I decided that I wanted to learn to drive. Until that point, bearing in mind that I was 20 years old, I wasn't that bothered - mainly because everything that I needed (work, family & friends) was close by.
Anytime that I needed to travel for work, I just travelled by train. A conversation with a friend of mine, who works in TV, prompted me to start driving lessons - because she said that it would help me get more work, as those with a driving licence are more likely to be hired for TV jobs. I began my lessons & thoroughly enjoyed them, more than I expected to & it became my obsession, so much so that I upped the lessons to 2 times a week. I downloaded all of the apps, bought all of the books & I was really enjoying myself. After a few months, I was ready for my theory test, my practical test & also, to buy my 1st car. I booked the tests & I picked my brand new car. 3 days before I was due to buy the car, I had a routine eye appointment at my local hospital.
September 2nd 2015: the day that I was told, due to a rare eye condition (retinitis pigmentosa), I would never be able to drive. It was obviously a tough period of my life & the full story of that day & the following weeks is personal to me & also far too long to explain, but it was obviously a life-changing end to 2015.
After a few months had passed, I then decided that I wanted to turn this negative experience into a positive & rewarding one. This is where my year of fundraising began. I spent weeks emailing & contacting various people & companies & started to build a list of great prizes to give away & the interest was clearly there. The main goal was to host an event, as it's the best way to raise money & awareness. As a massive fan of Britain's Got Talent & The X Factor, I couldn't not have a talent show as my event.
Every single penny that is raised will go straight to RP: Fighting Blindness & it will be used to help find a cure for retinitis pigmentosa, a condition that 25,000 people have.
